  5. FROM MICHELANGELO TO RODIN THROUGH THE LENS OF ALINARI

From Michelangelo to Rodin through the lens of Alinari

At Casa Museo Ivan Bruschi, an exhibition exploring the dialogue between historical photography and great sculpture through the Alinari archives

Curated by Rita Scartoni, the exhibition explores how nineteenth-century photography helped disseminate, document and reinterpret the work of Michelangelo Buonarroti, creating an ideal bridge with the artistic research of figures such as Auguste Rodin and Émile-Antoine Bourdelle.

Through photographs by the Fratelli Alinari and major photographer-publishers such as Brogi and Anderson, visitors encounter some of the most significant images devoted to sculptural masterpieces, from David to the Dying Slave, and on to The Thinker and The Hand of God. Photography thus emerges not only as a means of reproduction, but also as a language capable of interpreting and conveying the work of art.

The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how images have contributed to the circulation of artistic models and to the construction of the modern gaze, bringing together different periods, artists and places: Florence, Rome, Paris and the great heritage of European sculpture.

Organised and promoted by Fondazione Ivan Bruschi, part of the cultural heritage of Intesa Sanpaolo, with Fondazione CR Firenze and in collaboration with Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia, the exhibition also offers the opportunity to visit Casa Museo Ivan Bruschi, in the heart of Arezzo’s historic centre.
