Margarito d’Arezzo is one of the key figures of 13th-century Italian painting, active during a transitional period between the Byzantine tradition and the earliest forms of independent figurative language. This itinerary begins with his works preserved at the Museum of Medieval Art and the Pieve di Santa Maria, and continues into the full Renaissance era with the frescoes by Piero della Francesca and the Vasari House Museum.

Giorgio Vasari, painter, architect, and art historian, left a strong mark on his hometown. His vision of the Renaissance as a project of order and beauty is still visible in the places that bear his name and in the traces of his work. This itinerary crosses the city following the thread of his presence, among palaces, frescoes, and civic architecture. It is an invitation to see Arezzo through the eyes of someone who both depicted and, in part, transformed it.

In his Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, José Saramago recounts a journey through Italy that is both geographical and inward. Among the cities he visited, Arezzo holds a special place: it is described with measured yet affectionate words that convey the light, calm, and balance of the place. This itinerary is not meant to “see everything,” but to slow down, observe more closely, and pause where no one stops, just as he would have done. It is a literary and perceptive journey rather than a tourist one. An invitation to walk with different eyes.

This itinerary reveals the deep identity of Arezzo, through civic rituals, antiques, and time-honored crafts. The Giostra del Saracino, with its Quartieri (quarters) and historic costumes, is not just a spectacle: it is a living expression of local belonging. The same applies to the Fiera Antiquaria, active since 1968, which has created a widespread network of antique dealers and galleries, as well as places like the Ivan Bruschi House Museum of Antiques and the Museum of Communication Means. The journey is completed by another deeply rooted tradition: goldsmithing, a local excellence still thriving today, celebrated by the Orodautore Museum. A path through collective memory, material culture, and craftsmanship.

An invitation to explore the city starting from its people: faces and stories that shape the cultural and productive life of Arezzo. Artists, artisans, gallery owners, and other protagonists of craftsmanship, each with a distinct identity, yet all connected by a tangible relationship with material, time, and space. Every encounter tells a different way of inhabiting art, creative work, and the city’s material heritage. Galleries, workshops, and production spaces are living places where experimentation, preservation, and transmission take place. This journey does not follow a rigid map but invites movement among stories and places, to recognize in everyday details the power of making and the value of presence.
