The magic of Christmas continues to be the protagonist of this first weekend in December with the attractions of Arezzo Città del Natale combined with all the charm of the Antiques Fair for an unforgettable weekend. The light installations, the panoramic wheel, Father Christmas’s house and about 400 stalls of antique dealers will make the visit to the historical centre unique.
The weekend in the Arezzo area also offers temporary exhibitions where you can discover nativity scenes, art and history.
Arezzo Christmas Town, the weekend programme
The calendar of “Arezzo Città del Natale” comes to life. Until 9 January next, it offers a series of fixed attractions and events that allow visitors to experience the magical atmosphere of this time of year. At the first shadows of evening, the buildings in the old town centre are lit up with light installations that offer an unusual interpretation of the architecture, accompanying the visitor on a fascinating and spectacular itinerary. In the large green area of the Prato, the tall Ferris wheel offers a sweeping view of the city, with the beauty of the landscape changing throughout the day. For the youngest and not only, there is the “Christmas Brick Arezzo“, the Christmas village made with the most famous bricks in the world: over three hundred square metres of exhibition and workshops. There are many opportunities for shopping, with the “Mercato delle Meraviglie” in the Prato area, rich in typical gastronomic products and many curiosities. In the nearby Piazza Grande, the Tyrolean Village shines, where exhibitors from the Tyrol, Germany and Austria offer Christmas items and typical products. Here, the little ones are awaited at Santa’s House, set up in the Palazzo di Fraternita. Traditional markets are also set up in Piazza San Jacopo and Piazza Risorgimento, while in Piazza Guido Monaco there is a market for handmade arts.
Numerous events embellish the weekend. At the Prato, on Saturday 4 December from 4.00 pm, the Musicians of the Giostra del Saracino will perform, taking the public on a journey through Arezzo’s history. At 5 p.m. the show “La danza dei Cigni di Luce” (The dance of the swans of light) where illuminated silk sculptures in the shape of giant swans dance. On Sunday 5 December at 4.00 p.m. (repeated at 5.00 p.m.) the atmosphere becomes magical with “Il Carillon Vivente”, a white grand piano, a sweet dancer and luminous waders all around. At 3.00 p.m. (repeated at 5.00 p.m.), also on Sundays, fun is guaranteed with Woow – Teatro C’Art, a pair of clowns travelling through the streets of the park in their bizarre vehicles.
In the streets of the town centre, at 6 p.m. the traditional Christmas music will resound with the performance of the Zampognari.
On Saturday and Sunday, the tourist guide associations offer guided tours accompanying small groups to discover the historical and artistic beauties of the city. Sunday 5 December “Waiting for Christmas in the Fortress”, at 11.00 a.m. the visit “The hill of San Donato, San Donato in Cremona, the Capitolium: the origin of the city of Arezzo and its evolution over time”; at 4.00 p.m. the visit “The Fortress and the Prato at dusk with the magic of the sunset and the suggestion of the four valleys. A journey through time and beauty”.
The Antiques Fair, waiting for Christmas
The December Antiques Fair has always been a fascinating event, and this year it is even more so because of its combination with the attractions of Arezzo City of Christmas. Strolling along the streets of the centre, decorated for the festivities, you will be surrounded by rare pieces and fascinating worlds, you will have the opportunity to make the last Christmas gifts, to find that vintage decoration that completes the tree or choose silverware for the dinner and place cards that will win everyone over for their originality.

Art, exhibitions, cribs to visit
The programme of exhibitions and art shows offers opportunities for in-depth study or discovery of artists, stories and places.
The Pinacoteca of the Venturino Venturi Museum in Loro Ciuffenna hosts until 6 February “La Divina Commedia di Venturino Venturi”, an exhibition of large maps made using the oil-printing technique that the artist has dedicated to Dante’s poem.
In San Giovanni V.no, on Saturday 4 December the XVIII nativities exhibition opens at the Basilica di S. Maria delle Grazie, with an exhibition entitled “Il cielo in una stanza”, where nativities are presented through Italian and international music. In Arezzo, at the Casa Museo Ivan Bruschi on Friday 3 December the exhibition “Bruno Galoppi. Il design orafo tra anni Cinquanta e Settanta ad Arezzo”. On display are jewellery and paintings by 20th century painters, including a work by Alberto Burri entitled Combustione CP3 – 1964.
In Anghiari, from Saturday 4th December the shops in the historical centre become the stages of an itinerary of the exhibition “Presepi delle Nazioni” (Nativity Scenes), while on Sunday 5th December at 3pm there will be a free guided tour of the exhibition “The Civilisation of Arms and the Courts of the Renaissance” which will be held at the Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari until 6th January.
Hiking in nature with Outdoor Experience
The appointments of the Outdoor Experience calendar continue, excursions and open-air experiences to discover fascinating but lesser-known corners of the territory.
On Sunday 5th December, starting at 3.00 p.m., “Trekking on the ancient railway”, an itinerary to discover the railway that once connected the town of Fossato di Vico in nearby Umbria, passing through Valtiberina. At 2.30 p.m. also on Sunday in Arezzo, “On horseback with Father Christmas”, an experience for children from 3 to 16 years old who will be able to ride ponies and horses and play games of skill on horseback, or make a simple excursion among the colours of the wood in autumn.
All the excursions in the Outdoor Experience programme, promoted and organised by the Arezzo Intour Foundation, must be booked in advance.
