With the first weekend of September, a series of exceptional events arrive in the Arezzo area, unmissable opportunities that invite you to visit Arezzo and all its valleys to discover historical events, folklore and tradition, antiques and quality craftsmanship.
The Saracino Joust, a dip in the Middle Ages
At the weekend the awaited the Saracino Joust returns to Arezzo, the knightly tournament of medieval origin also mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy, which fascinates the people of Arezzo and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The program foresees the general rehearsal on Friday 3 September at 9.30 pm, the one that for the inhabitants of Arezzo is the so-called “Provaccia”. Then the propitiatory dinners on Saturday evening, which allow you to experience the atmosphere and colors of the four city districts between ritual and tradition.
The key event on Sunday 5 September with the Saracino Joust in the setting of Piazza Grande, when the epic challenge between the jousting takes place starting at 5.00 pm.
Antiques Fair of Arezzo
The monthly appointment with the Antiques Fair, the oldest in Italy, is renewed on Saturday and Sunday. The September edition, to coincide with the Giostra del Saracino, moves its stalls to Prato di Arezzo, the historic garden of the city, for an edition full of rare objects that offer a real journey through time.
The Blacksmith Art Biennial and the World Forging Championship
In Stia, in the green Casentino, the European Biennial of Wrought Iron takes place, a historic event in the area and a point of reference in the world panorama for blacksmith art that attracts the best international artists in the sector. Until Sunday 5 September every corner of the town is involved in blacksmith art with exhibitions and artisans at work. Among the most spectacular events to attend, the forging world championship. A challenge between blacksmiths, with hammer blows on forges on fire from dawn to late at night to win the title of world forging champion.

The “handmade” exhibition in Anghiari
In Valtiberina, in Anghiari from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 September the old shops in the historic center reopen to host the 46th edition of the Tuscan Valtiberina Handicraft Market Exhibition. An event that enhances the excellence of craftsmanship and “handmade Made in Italy” and invites you to admire the craftsmanship of the products in the sectors of wood, leather, fabrics, wrought iron, ceramics and precious metals. The visit to the Anghiari village is enriched by the exhibition “The civilization of arms and the courts of the Renaissance – Federico da Montefeltro in Anghiari”, an important opportunity to reveal a new story about men of arms, the social class that distinguished Anghiari between the fifteenth and Sixteenth century with precious works of art from the Uffizi Galleries.

The Gioco del Pozzo in Montevarchi
During the weekend, the Feste del Perdono di Montevarchi, popular events with an ancient tradition that take place in the month of September throughout the Valdarno area, come to life. Among the many events, the historical re-enactment and the Gioco del Pozzo (Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September), an event that takes us back to the Middle Ages and that recalls the arrival in the city of Count Guerra with the Relic of the Holy Milk of the Madonna donated to Prior of the Insigne Collegiate. In the central square of the city the Gioco del Pozzo takes place, a challenge between the teams of the districts who compete for the right of priority to draw water from the “city well”.

Cortonantiquaria, last weekend
Cortonantiquaria, the exhibition-event that takes place in the halls of the Centro di Sant’Agostino, closes its doors on Sunday 5 September, with the exhibition of high-quality antiques including furniture, porcelain, paintings, wooden and marble statues, fabrics, prints, silver, tapestries, Persian carpets, crockery, jewelry. The program of collateral is rich, creating moments of encounter between antique dealers, specialists and passionate visitors.

The Time Travel Experience program also continues in September, offering the unmissable opportunity to discover the history, traditions and lifestyles of this land. Friday 3 September “Make your own fresco painting”, to discover and try the techniques of fresco painting that the master Piero della Francesca also used. Saturday 4th September “Master craftsmen at the museum” an event where you can discover the secrets of the ancient manufactories with a craft workshop on fabric decoration. Sunday 5 September appointment with “I Novellatori” for a visit to the city led by two actors in medieval clothes through anecdotes and stories.
