Cantina Canaio

Cantina Canaio is the representation of one family’s passion for agriculture and vineyards; a love that has distant origins and is deeply rooted in its people. After decades of grape production, in 2014 the family decided to create their own labels, fully embracing the choices made by Cortona in previous years.
The idea of starting Cantina Canaio was born in 2012, following a split of the historic family farm. At that time, Cantina Canaio decided to grow Syrah in the vineyards and to create a small plot that would grow Merlot. The farmhouse, which has belonged to the family since the 1600s, has been restored to its former glory, keeping all its characteristics intact. At the same time, work began on the construction of the Cellar.
The name “Canaio” is inspired by the name of an ancestor who lived on the family estate. He was nicknamed “il Canaio” because he loved hunting and, therefore, he had quite a large number of dogs (cani).
In a small to medium-sized company like Cantina Canaio, the predominant philosophy is to focus on a single goal: quality. Every choice Cantina Canaio makes is of the utmost importance, and requires absolute dedication and attention to every detail. Whether in the vineyard or in the cellar, no shortcuts are allowed. Each vintage is interpreted for what it is, without seeking any kind of standardisation.
