Petrolo

Tenuta di Petrolo is located in the Valdarno di Sopra, bordering the south-eastern slopes of the Chianti Classico mountains. The area’s soil contains marl, limestone and sandstone, and is enriched with clay.
The estate covers 272 hectares and is located at an altitude between 250 and 400 metres above sea level in an area that is particularly suited to making top quality wines. Currently, Tenuta di Petrolo concentrates its activities on the production of fine wines, IGP Toscano organic extra virgin olive oil and, since the 1980s, the estate also has an agritourism with a beautiful rural Tuscan setting.
Since the second half of the 1980s, the winemaker has been solely focused on producing wines with character. They have a connection to the terroir thanks to vines that are predominantly Sangiovese, then Merlot, and with a small plot of Cabernet Sauvignon. It continues today with a careful grape selection process, low productivity per plant and scrupulous work in the cellar, where the tendency is to enhance, without wasting, the fruit of the surrounding nature.
In the 1950s there were 1500 plants per hectare, with a total production of 3500 hectolitres of wine. Today, with 5500 plants per hectare, Tenuta di Petrolo produces just under 800 hectolitres. The intention is not to spoil, but to transform without too much alteration, the already wonderful work that is carried out by nature, turning grapes into wine.
The effects of this philosophy can be seen in the range of Petrolo wines. They are all top standard, and constantly striving for the very best quality. At Petrolo there is no such thing as a basic wine. There are only great wines. This is the company’s mission.
Ever faithful to these principles, this winery has grown by focusing only on labels that guarantee high quality and, at the same time, provide a product that is consistent with the identity of the estate. Making a great wine requires the commingling of several factors: special soil and climate conditions, delicate and conscious work in the vineyard and cellar, and also a good bit of luck.
With the coexistence of the vines with the woods, olive groves and landscaped gardens as well as the composition of the soil, Petrolo constitutes a microcosm with unique conditions that help to perfectly balance the different grape varieties.
