Starting out from the railway station of Castiglion Fiorentino (that is easy to reach from Florence) we will meander our way into the Valdichiana (Valley of the Chiana) and follow it south. We will continue gradually into the surrounding hills enjoying enchanting olive groves, vineyards, woodlandsand pastures before arriving at Montecchio Castle (13th Century) which dominates the valley below.

This route will be familiar to locals, but difficult to plan without a guide.

I will tell you about the many intriguing stories of this area, from the old lake, the maps of thesurrounding area by Leonardo da Vinci and the numerous battles fought over control of the city.

Path: we’ll mainly travel along gravel tracks, and a few easy off-road bike trails, all flat or with gentle gradients.
