The Civic Museum of Sansepolcro presents the exhibition “URBAN FRESCOES. PIERO meets an artist called BANKSY” curated by Gianluca Marziani and Stefano S. Antonelli.
After the COVID-19 emergency, the exhibition spaces of the city museum will reopen with the most famous pieces of the mysterious artist from Bristol, framed within the generic boundaries of street art. It will be possible to closely observe many pieces such as the iconic Girl with Balloon, Love is in the Air, Virgin Mary or Toxic Mary with all its references to the iconography of the Renaissance.
Regarding the links between Piero and Banksy, the curators Antonelli and Marziani write in the catalogue: “The hieratic image of Christ emanates a solid civic feeling, recreating an iconic weight as guidance for a moral future. The Christ of Piero is a leader of the spirit and of action who shows the way and stigmatizes errors offering to the city an inclusive and participatory model based on the alchemy of pietas and pathos. That Christ, who holds the banner in his hand, is majestic with his athletic posture and he observes the present with the ethical weapons of universal themes. These are the same themes that return, with due differences, in Banksy’s overall imagery. They include the education of young people, the fight against bullying and intrusive power, warnings about social control, a love of nature, tolerance and integration. These are like the front page of the human agenda and Banksy’s moral obsessions resemble the ideal visions of Piero della Francesca, with his dream of a polis that communicates high values through narrative walls and metaphors with high figurative impact.”
The exhibition is sponsored and supported by the City of Sansepolcro, promoted and produced by Metamorfosi Cultural Association, in collaboration with Civita.
