The Rificolona

Every year, on the eve of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the “Rificolona” is celebrated in San Giovanni Valdarno.

Around the mid-1600s, groups of pilgrims illuminated their path with torches and lanterns to reach Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in Florence during the night for the feast of the Nativity of Mary. This traditional nighttime procession has been passed down to our times, even in San Giovanni Valdarno. The “Rificolona” are colorful paper lanterns, specially crafted for the occasion. Adding to this tradition since the post-World War II era is the decoration of pumpkins.
