This race is not just a horse race that resembles the races held during ancient Roman times, it has become the most important festival in the town. The “Palio” of Rioni is a historical event held every year on the third Sunday of June. The Piazza Garibaldi or square, locally known as the “Parterre,” is set up especially for this event.

The aim of  “Palio” of Rioni is to win the prized banner with the Holy Image of the “Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio.” Three urban districts compete against one another: Porta Romana, the Cassero and Porta Fiorentina. They challenge each other on horseback and lead our imagination right back to the Middle Ages in Tuscany.

Immerse yourself in the spirit of this ancient town and take part in the pre-race dinners and medieval games that are held in each district. Don’t miss the competitions between musicians and flag throwers as well as the historical procession of each district with dames, knights and soldiers. The elegant clothes, the crowns, the armor, the drum rolls and the flags that color Castiglion sky — all of these come together in a timeless show.
