The Palio della Vittoria

A race to celebrate the Renaissance charm of the Battle of Anghiari

The evocative event commemorates the historic battle fought on June 29, 1440, between Florentine and Milanese troops. An unmissable event that combines history, tradition, sport and folklore, animating the streets and squares of Anghiari.
The Palio della Vittoria has its roots in 1441, the year after the battle. Instituted to celebrate the Florentine victory, it soon became an identity symbol for the city of Anghiari and the whole of Tuscany. The foot race, with its challenging climb and the physical contact admitted between the runners, re-presents the central element of the Palio. A moment of great agonism and spectacle that has thril-led the public for centuries.

6:30 PM

Historical processions, musicians and flag-wavers will give life to an evocative historical re-enactment, culminating with the entrance of the Mayors of the participating municipalities into Piazza Baldaccio.

8:30 PM

At sunset, the runners will compete in a 1440-meter climb, starting from the Chapel of Victory and finishing in Piazza Baldaccio. This is a demanding challenge that requires strength, endurance and strategy, where physical contact is allowed to hinder oppo-nents and favour one’s own captain.
Immediately after the race, the prize-giving ceremony will take place, with the awarding of the Palio to the winning municipality.

9:30 PM

To end the day on a high note, the Victory Dinner will be held at 21:30 on the Antiche Mura di Anghi-ari. An occasion to taste the typical flavours of the territory in the company of the protagonists of the Palio and the citizens (reservation required).
