Terre d’Arezzo, a festival where great classical music is the soloist in a magnificent concert of art, culture, history and landscape.
Organised by the ‘Opera Viwa’ Association with the patronage and contribution of MIC, the Ministry of Culture, the Tuscan Region’s Performing Arts Sector, and the patronage of the Province of Arezzo, the Festival reaches its 18th edition this year. Even richer and more extensive is the programme, which will cross the territory of no less than 16 municipalities in the province of Arezzo, presenting a varied array of events with exceptional guests and programmes.
After the preview concert, scheduled for Thursday, 6 July at Borgo Mocale Bio Agriturismo in Castelfranco Piandiscò, with “In viaggio con Ruggiero Leoncavallo”, starring Silvia Martinelli, soprano, and Ingrid Carbone, piano, the festival will start on 12 July and will end on 7 September 2023 and will host, as usual, the Arezzo Organ Festival.
The “locations” will be the most varied and evocative, starting from the historical palaces and monumental churches in the historic centre of Arezzo, and extending to the treasures of the territory: villages, Romanesque parish churches, ancient cloisters, gardens, villas and squares.
Some of the Festival’s events in detail. For the inauguration, a concert with an unprecedented theme: ‘Bach and Piazzolla’, with the duo formed by Cesare Chiacchiaretta on accordion and Tito Ciccarese, flute, in the beautiful setting of the Cloister of the State Archives (12 July, 6 pm). The Ensemble Dorati will be the protagonist of the concert for oboe and strings in collaboration with the 29th String Quartet Festival (13 July, Pieve di S. Pietro a Gropina, Loro Ciuffenna).
The main event of this Festival will follow, the Concert “In tempore passionis”, in the extraordinary setting of the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo (14 July). The protagonist is the Cappella Musicale della Cappella Musicale della Patriarcale Basilica di San Marco in Venice (Cappella Marciana), one of the oldest and most prestigious vocal ensembles in the world under the guidance of Maestro Marco Gemmani, with organ accompaniment by Andrea Trovato. The entire programme is dedicated to Claudio Monteverdi with the ‘Missa in illo tempore’ and other sacred compositions dedicated to the Passion of Christ. This concert marks the beginning of the series dedicated to organ music: “Arezzo Organ Festival” 2023, in its 10th edition.
Other highlights on 16 July with a concert by Alexander Somov (cello) and Daniel Pandolfo (organ), at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Donato. The Festa Rustica ensemble offers the concert “Risonanze Barocche”, with instrumental music and sacred arias for voice, baroque flute and harpsichord (20 July, Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie di Montemarciano, Terranuova Bracciolini).
Dedicated to St. Augustine’s Letters, the 30 July appointment at the Basilica of San Domenico in Arezzo: “Florilegio agostiniano” with the reciting voice of Elena Zegna, Ubaldo Rosso on flute and Didier Hennuyer on organ. Concert on 1 August dedicated to auteur cinema with the Duo Vertigo, who will present “Non è un paese per vecchi” by the Cohen brothers in Piazza Battisti in San Giovanni Valdarno.
“Crossover Jazz from the Mediterranean to Latin America” is the theme of the concert by the “Piero Gaddi Jazz Quartet”, 2 August at the Churchyard of SS Tiburzio and Susanna in Bucine (loc. Perelli). The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine in Anghiari is the setting for the concert for organ and trumpet by the duo formed by Maurizio Pasqui and Andrea Trovato (5 August).
This is followed by “Suona l’armonica”, by the duo formed by Santo Albertini on harmonica and Edoardo Bruni on piano (6 August, Auditorium di S. Chiara, Sansepolcro). On 10 August, Night of the Stars, a double concert with “Summertime” at the Il Verreno Residence in Bucine (loc. Ambra) and “Summer Nocturnes” with the UmbriaEnsemble Quartet at the Convent of Montecarlo in San Giovanni Valdarno. Also in San Giovanni Valdarno on 23 August “From Bach to Queen”, starring the Frescobaldi Ensemble, and on 4 September “Romantic Songs”, with the Opera Viwa Trio formed by Silvia Martinelli, soprano, Fabio Taruschio, flute and Andrea Trovato on piano.
Croatian pianist Marjan Duzel offers a recital on “Paraphrases on the Dies Irae” (1 September, Chiostro di S. Agostino, Cortona). On 7 September, last concert at Borgo Mocale Bio Agriturismo (Castelfranco Pianidscò) with the piano duo Vesna Ocwirk & Ennio Clari.
