Porta Santo Spirito Museum

The Porta Santo Spirito Museum will be open to the public for free on the Sundays of the Arezzo Antique Fair

The Museum is located inside the western bastion, one of the two built after the demolition of the ancient Porta Santo Spirito. Restored in 2013, it is the treasure chest of the Porta Santo Spirito District: it houses the Golden Lances won from 1932 to the present day, the Golden Register of victories, and some historical costumes from the event.
The Museum is a destination for tourist and school visits, as well as a venue for exhibitions and conferences related to the District, the Giostra del Saracino, and the city of Arezzo.

In addition to historical and current banners, the museum features precious handcrafted objects such as:
• The plate by ceramist Zulimo Aretini, a unique piece dedicated to the Porta Santo Spirito District (1931)
• The Representative Flag and the three-dimensional artwork depicting the Emblem and the facade of the eastern bastion, both by the Sienese artist Rita Rossella Ciani
• The painting by Zanobi Bigazzi portraying Saint James, Patron Saint of the District
• The Golden Register of the General Trial victories, created by Valentina Fornasari, and the wooden bas-relief of the Madonna del Conforto by master Francesco Conti

In the exhibition halls, some historical costumes from the Giostra del Saracino are displayed:
• The costume of the municipal standard-bearer of the Porta Santo Spirito District (1930), created from a sketch by the Arezzo painter Gualtiero de’ Bacci Venuti
• The costumes of the palafrenier, armored knight, and captain from 1934, designed by Luigi Sapelli known as “Caramba,” scenographer of La Scala in Milan
• The costumes of page, armiger, crossbowman, and noble knight used in the Giostra from 1956 to 1992, designed by the great Nino Vittorio Novarese, an Academy Award-winning costume designer.
