The MAEC in Cortona dedicates a major international exhibition to Gino Severini, sixty years after the artist’s death
Cortona celebrates one of its most important artists with “Gino Severini. Modernity as Dialogue”, an international exhibition hosted at the MAEC – Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the City of Cortona, in Palazzo Casali.
Curated by Daniela Fonti and Margherita d’Ayala Valva, the exhibition offers a new interpretation of Severini’s artistic and personal journey, presenting him as a central figure in 20th-century art and a leading protagonist of the European avant-gardes. The theme of dialogue runs throughout the exhibition: between Italy and France, tradition and innovation, Futurism and classicism, modern art and spirituality.
The exhibition brings together more than eighty works, including paintings, drawings, documents and archive materials from Italian and international museums and major private collections. Among the most significant works is “La danse du Pan Pan à Monico”, a masterpiece from Severini’s Futurist period on loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, exceptionally returning to Italy.
The exhibition is organised into five sections and traces the main stages of Severini’s artistic research: from his early Divisionist works to his Paris years, from Futurism to his dialogue with Cubism, through to his return to classicism and the religious and monumental works of his mature period.
“Modernity as Dialogue” is also an invitation to rediscover the deep bond between Gino Severini and Cortona, his hometown, where the journey can continue through the permanent MAEC rooms dedicated to the artist and the Severini itineraries in the historic centre.
