Every year on 7 September, the eve of the nativity of the Madonna, the Rificolona is celebrated, an event of the Florentine tradition, also imported to San Giovanni Valdarno. Around the mid-1600s, groups of pilgrims illuminated the path with torches and lanterns to reach the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in Florence at night, for the feast of the Nativity of Mary. The traditional night parade has been handed down to the present day.

The Rificolone are colorful paper lanterns, made specifically for the occasion. To this tradition, from the second post-war period, the decoration of pumpkins is also added.

The appointment is Tuesday 7 September 2021 in Piazza Masaccio, in San Giovanni Valdarno. It will be a limited edition due to Covid regulations, both for the competition (which is free to register) and for spectators. Only 15 rificolone and 15 pumpkins will be able to enter the competition and reservations will open from Thursday 26 August.

The program foresees at 9.15 pm the blessing of the rificolone and the pumpkins given by the Basilica of SS. Maria delle Grazie and to follow the traditional competition of rificolone and pumpkins.

Pumpkins to decorate for children will be available from 1 September at the Pro Loco Office.
