The exhibition focuses on a central period in the artistic evolution of Raphael, who, on his return from the Rome of Pope Leo X, brought important innovations in painting to Sansepolcro and all of central Italy.
An exhibition full of the artist’s works and documents, from all over Italy and even abroad, from the places where Raffaellino’s works and testimonies are kept.
Documents in the municipal archives show that the first idea to hold an exhibition dedicated to Raffaellino del Colle at the Sansepolcro Civic Museum dates back to 2008. Various vicissitudes forced the exhibition to be postponed in time. A project that was definitively interrupted following the suspension by the Superintendency of Arezzo, in 2015, of the restoration of the great altarpiece entitled the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin, begun in 2010 precisely in view of the realisation of the exhibition on its author. Today the altarpiece, thanks to the fundamental support of two institutions, the Municipality of Sansepolcro and the Superintendency of Siena, Grosseto and Arezzo, and, meritoriously, to the passionate and generous work of a group of art historians and restorers, coordinated by the management of the Civic Museum, is finally back in its seat, after years of absence from the Museum (since 2018) and even longer interdiction from public use.
