“L’Elisir d’amore” is a melodrama in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti, scheduled to be performed on July 7th as part of the Pieve Classica 2023 festival.
The story revolves around the events of the humble peasant Nemorino, who is in love with Adina but unable to declare his love. The balance is abruptly disrupted with the arrival of Dulcamara (Donizetti’s charlatan), who pretends to be a doctor and sells Nemorino a fictitious love elixir…
The opera premiered on May 12, 1832, at the Teatro della Cannobiana in Milan. Felice Romani drew inspiration for the libretto from a text written the previous year by Eugène Scribe for composer Daniel Auber, Le Philtre (The Love Potion). The characters will be portrayed by the singers of the Italian Opera Company of Florence, which has been accompanying PieveClassica for years to introduce the operas of great composers. The Italian Opera Company of Florence was founded in 2002. The company’s repertoire includes various operas such as The Barber of Seville, Cinderella, The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, A Masked Ball, La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Gianni Schicchi, The Elixir of Love, Don Pasquale, Lucia di Lammermoor, Carmen, Mozart’s Requiem, Petite Messe Solennelle, Stabat Mater, The Merry Widow, and Die Fledermaus.
