25-27 November weekend: what to do in the Arezzo area

Magic continues to be the star of the weekend with the attractions of Arezzo City of Christmas: light installations, markets, a Ferris wheel and much more to experience one of the most beautiful moments of the year.
At the weekend, the Arezzo area also offers other opportunities for visits, excursions in nature, and cultural events with music and theatre.

Arezzo City of Christmas, the weekend programme

Until Sunday 8 January 2023, the calendar of “Arezzo City of Christmas” involves the entire historic centre with a series of attractions and events that allow visitors to experience the magical atmospheres of this time of year. With the first shadows of evening, the buildings of the historic centre light up with light installations that offer an unusual interpretation of the architecture, accompanying the visitor on a fascinating and spectacular itinerary. In the large green area of the Prato, the large Ferris wheel offers a view of the entire historic centre, with the beauty of the landscape changing during the hours of the day. There are many opportunities for shopping, with the “Mercato delle Meraviglie” (Market of Wonders) in the Prato, rich in typical gastronomic products, handicrafts and many curiosities.
Among the absolute novelties is the “Fortress of Wonders” organised by the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo: inside the ancient Medici Fortress, located at the highest point of the Prato, a real village of Elves will be set up. A magical place where it will be possible to visit themed rooms and taste local delicacies.
For the young and not so young, there is the Brick House Art Gallery, a three-storey exhibition with works of art and workshops using a total of 2 million bricks. In the nearby Piazza Grande, the Tyrolean Village shines, where exhibitors from Tyrol, Germany and Austria offer Christmas items and delicacies. Here, the little ones are awaited at the Father Christmas House, set up in the Palazzo di Fraternita.
Traditional markets also take place in Piazza San Jacopo and Piazza Risorgimento, while in Piazza Guido Monaco there is a market for handmade arts.
Numerous special events are planned for this weekend. On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Prato area, there will be the Parata Luminosa (Luminous Parade) with tall stilt-walkers parading through the centre in white costumes and decorated with LED lights in a scenic white Christmas. On Saturday 26th from 3.00 p.m. there will be a show with the Sbandieratori della Giostra del Saracino (Flag-wavers of the Saracino Joust) who will perform their games of skill and acrobatics that have enchanted the world. Not to be missed on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November, starting at 4.30 p.m. in the Lawn area, is the ‘Christmas carousel’ show with the arrival of a white glittering vehicle with wheels and an electric motor driven by Father Christmas, who travels while a White Christmas girl performs acrobatics on a revolving moon.

During the entire period of the event (until 8 January 2023), “Christmas at the Museum” will be available for the first time, a single ticket with an open date, which will allow visitors to visit some of the city’s art treasures such as the Museum of the Fraternita dei Laici, the Museum of Gold, the exhibition route “The Colours of the Joust”, the Ivan Bruschi House Museum of Antiques and the MUMEC Museum of the Means of Communication. The ticket will cost €12 (€6 reduced for children aged 6 to 14, students aged 15 to 25, and the over-65s). The individual museums can be visited every day by the end of the event, with the exception of days when the museums are closed.
